Eldridge W. Sanderson Memorial Scholarship

Elizabeth W. Dawson Memorial Scholarship

Mrs. Elizabeth Watson Dawson, a native of Cumberland County, Virginia, was the youngest of eleven children born to George and Hattie Watson, and the first to attend and graduate from college.

This scholarship is being established in her honor to advance her belief that If everyone would reach back and help someone, the world would be a better place.

Mrs. Dawson matriculated at Virginia Union University, graduating in 1945, as a K-12 English teacher, with a minor in French. She returned home and began her teaching career at Hawk School in Cumberland County. The following year, she was assigned as teacher at the Cumberland Training School to teach English and French. Once the new Luther P. Jackson School was completed, she served as teacher of high school English and French, and later assigned to the Cumberland High School, from which she retired in 1978.

One of her favorite hymns, 'If I Can Help Somebody', personifies her desire to help others in need, and her belief, that education makes a difference in an individual's life. Therefore, this scholarship is established to provide need-based assistance to deserving students wishing to attain their educational goals. Though the scholarship is not major specific, it is partial to those wishing to matriculate at Virginia Union University.

Two scholarships will be awarded each year to Cumberland County High School seniors. Criteria for eligibility include all application guidelines set forth by the Cumberland County Public Schools Foundation, financial need and academic achievement (must have an overall grade point average no lower than 2.5). Students interested must possess an attitude of seriousness about pursuing a career, a willingness to help others, and must be a native of Cumberland County attending Cumberland County High School. The scholarships will be awarded and applied toward the student's college tuition or other academic needs.
